Environmental Action Week: Policy Advocacy for Environmental Protection
Effective policy advocacy-based environmental actions can be achieved through engagement with state legislators. To learn practical tips, this workshop focuses on Michigan’s role in wetland protection.
First, Dr. You will help attendees explore Michigan’s legal basis for wetland protection, discussing the specific policies that are meant to safeguard these diverse landscapes. Affectionately known as nature’s kidneys, wetlands filter pollutants from our groundwater, shield us from adverse flooding and erosion impacts, and provide critical year-round habitat for wildlife. However, they’re also under threat: in Michigan, we’ve lost over 50% of historical wetlands.
Second, Dr. You will help attendees learn how to write effective letters to state legislators by leveraging generative AI tools, such as Google Gemini. Attendees can apply lessons from this workshop to any environmental issue or place they care about. We will bridge the gap between policy on paper and the real world, where environmental action has a tangible impact on environmental protection.
