Opportunities and Challenges of Using GenAI for Open Education: A Panel Discussion

NMU Logo on bricks

The Science Building

To mark Open Education Week, Clint Lalonde (Director of Open Education, BCcampus) and Chloe McGinley (Acting Associate Dean & Director of The Learning Center, College of the Canyons) will discuss the opportunities and challenges of using Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) to create open educational resources (OER) and to support open education more generally. They will talk about the copyright implications and ethical considerations of using GenAI to assist the creation and adaptation of OER.

This will be a hybrid event. Those interested can either join us in-person in The Science Building, Room 2810 or join via Zoom (register here).

This event is supported by SISU Innovation Funding.

Clint Lalonde has worked in the British Columbia post-secondary system for 30 years and is currently the Director of Open Education for BCcampus, a government-funded non-profit organization that provides teaching, learning, educational technology, and open education support to the 25 public post-secondary institutions in British Columbia, Canada. A founding member of the BC Open EdTech Collaborative, Clint is also a past board member of the Apereo Foundation and is an Associate Faculty in the School of Education & Technology at Royal Roads University.

Chloe McGinley is an Online Education Coordinator and the acting Associate Dean and Director of The Learning Center at College of the Canyons (COC). A passionate advocate for innovation in online education, she champions creative and ethical approaches to integrating new technology such as generative AI, and equity-driven practices like Open Educational Resources, to promote student success, persistence, and completion. She also serves as a facilitator for COC’s Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning. Chloe has co-authored "Open Education with Generative AI," an original online course that explores the connections between Generative AI, OER and Open Pedagogy, and has developed a non-credit AI Literacy course for college students. Beyond her role at College of the Canyons, Chloe serves as a course facilitator for the California Virtual Campus/Online Education Initiative (CVC/OEI) Online Network of Educators (@ONE), and the California Community College Chancellor's Office Zero Textbook Cost (ZTC) Grant Program.

Deciphering Monoterpene Indole and Oxindole Alkaloids Biosynthesis In Mitragyna Species

Presented via Zoom by Dr. Satya Swathi Nadakuduti

Dr. Satya Swathi Nadakuduti is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Environmental Horticulture at the University of Florida. Dr. Nadakuduti received her Ph.D. in Plant Breeding, Genetics, and Biotechnology from Michigan State University.

Her lab is interested in studying plants' specialized metabolism to understand the chemical diversity and identify compounds that have pharmaceutical value, and their potential for health benefits and applications in agriculture. Her research program integrates multi-disciplinary approaches such as biochemistry, genomics, gene discovery, and functional characterization to understand the molecular mechanisms underlying the biosynthesis of these compounds. Her group is also interested in targeted genome modifications using gene-editing technology such as CRISPR/Cas9 for agriculture crop improvement, as a functional genomics tool and to understand genome-wide off-target effects caused by gene-editing reagents. Her group is interested in micropropagation and implementing gene editing in medicinally relevant plant species.
