Poetry & Environment Workshop with Puerto Rican Award-Winning Poet, Mara Pastor!

Poetry and Environment Workshop with Mara Pastor

Languages, Literatures and International Studies

Join us for a fun and creative writing workshop with a focus on poetry and the environment led by poet Mara Pastor! This event is sponsored by the Department of Languages, Literatures, and International Studies, the English Department, NMU Honors Program, and the College of Arts & Sciences.

Dr. Mara Pastor is the author of six full-length poetry books in Spanish, as well as two bilingual chapbooks. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan and is currently a professor and the Academic Leader of The Creative Writing Program and Literature Program at the Universidad del Sagrado Corazón in San Juan. Her book Deuda Natal (The University of Arizona Press, 2021, translated by María José Giménez and Anna Rosenwong) won the 2020 Ambroggio Award from the Academy of American Poets. Deuda Natal takes us from the aftermath of Hurricane María in Puerto Rico to the communal efforts to rebuild, reconnect, and imagine ways to fight “disaster capitalism” (Naomi Klein, 2018). It contains reflections on immigration, returns, debt, feminism, colonialism, and ecological devastation while guiding us toward grassroots and intimate alternatives.

Study Abroad in Salamanca - Interest Meetings

Salamanca at Night

Languages, Literatures and International Studies

Are you studying Spanish and will have completed SN 202 or above by the end of this school year? Consider our Faculty-Led Study Abroad Program in Salamanca, Spain for Summer 2024! Salamanca is full of cultural activities, restaurants, museums, churches, and other neat things to see and do.

Students have three hours per day of small-group Spanish language classes, and an hour of class per day with an NMU Spanish professor -- all at the renowned Universidad de Salamanca, founded in 1218.

Afternoons and evenings are mostly free for exploring the city, hanging out with friends, drinking café con leche and enjoying the atmosphere. Former Salamanca FLSA participants have noted this experience to be at the top of their list of their undergraduate adventures here at Northern!

So ... have we piqued your curiosity? Join us for one of our three information sessions at 6:00 in 141 Whitman Hall.
