Rebecca Daly (Olson Library) and Anna Zimmer (LLIS and Honors) will show participants how to engage in two age-old, tried and true protest art forms. Create your own buttons while learning about the history of protesting against the degradation and destruction of the environment, including the exploitation of animals. From the original Indian Tree-huggers to the Animal Liberation Front in England and the fight against environmental racism in the US, learn about a variety of causes and the inspiring, clever, and impactful protest art used to spread awareness. Snail mail has also been utilized as a way to connect with fellow activists. Consider how designing and sending a creative greeting card can help you connect and collaborate with other humans. Fascist movements exploit feelings of isolation - fight them by crafting and strengthening our interconnectedness! Buttons have long been worn as small pieces of wearable protest art. 

This event is part of Environmental Action Week.

Set in the near future, this work is being written and produced by high school students as an attempt to grapple with the myriad crises that they are set to inherit. The young artists are attempting to balance reality and hope, with a healthy dash of poetry, to illustrate the real and imminent impacts of our changing world and society on their lives and the lives of future generations.

This talk begins with a virtual nature experience, inviting the audience to reflect on how nature affects them personally. We then explore psychological theories that explain these effects, including the Biophilia Hypothesis, Attention Restoration Theory, and Stress Reduction Theory. These frameworks help us understand research findings on nature’s impact on physical health recovery, mental health, and prosocial behavior.

Throughout the discussion, we will also examine real-world applications in health care, urban planning, therapy, interior design, wellness programs, and more.

Dr. April Lindala is a professor at the Center for Native American Studies at Northern Michigan University. She received her Ph.D in Rhetoric, Theory, and Culture from the Humanities Department at Michigan Technological University in Houghton. 

This seminar will explore how nine Indigenous documentary and experimental films relate to climate narratives. Dr. Lindala uses a decolonizing cinematic engagement practice to reflect on these different films.

Angeline Boulley, sponsored by the Center for Native American Studies, will speak at NMU at 6:00 pm, on Wednesday, April 24, 2024, in Jamrich 1322. The focus will be on the path to publication for her amazing works, The Firekeeper's Daughter and Warrior Girl Unearthed. 

There will be time for Q&A post-event, followed by a book signing at 7:15 pm. 

The general public is welcome to attend.
